Simian – Journey Inwards is part of Simian.nu, an ongoing experimental web project created by Ross Mawdsley at the beginning of the 2000s as a space for artistic exploration free from the constraints and requirements of commercial design. Developed in Flash, Simian uses the browser as a creative environment in which image, sound, movement, interaction, and narrative become inseparable elements of the experience.
The work rejects the conventional structures of web navigation. There is no clearly defined beginning or end, no predetermined sequence to follow, and no single path through the experience. The viewer must explore the environment, observe its behaviour, experiment with the interface, and progressively discover how to move from one moment to another. Navigation becomes an act of investigation, requiring time, attention, curiosity, and a willingness to become immersed in the atmosphere of the work.
Journey Inwards, like the other volumes of Simian, does not propose a single or predefined interpretation. Mawdsley describes the project as being “about everything that surrounds us and nothing in particular”, leaving the viewer responsible for discovering connections and constructing meaning. Images, sounds, transitions, and interactions form fragments of a narrative whose relationships are not explained but emerge progressively through experience.
The resulting narrative is therefore neither linear nor entirely authored in advance. It develops through the encounter between the structure created by the artist and the decisions made by the viewer. Different actions, discoveries, and sequences can produce different trajectories, transforming interaction from a functional mechanism into one of the fundamental materials of the work.
Created during a period of intense experimentation with Flash and the early web, Simian – Journey Inwards reflects an idea of the internet as a territory to inhabit and explore rather than simply a system for accessing information. Re-presented today in its original interactive form, the work restores an experience of the web in which uncertainty, discovery, patience, and individual interpretation are not obstacles to navigation, but precisely what makes navigation meaningful.

- Ross Mawdsley is a British designer and digital artist from Liverpool, England, and the creator of Simian.nu, an experimental web project developed at the beginning of the 2000s.
Working within the emerging creative possibilities of the early web, Mawdsley explored interactive design as a space for personal experimentation beyond the constraints of commercial production. His work belongs to a period in which artists and designers were beginning to use the browser not simply as a means of presenting information, but as...
